“In Praise of Shadows”
1915–2011 Yanagi Design
Yanagi was inspired by the design practice of Sori Yanagi, with particular emphasis on process. From the earliest stages, sketches were created using only poster paper and brushes, attempting to capture primitive forms of lettering. The typeface was not something planned, but something that emerged fully through making. The tools behind the typeface tell a story of Japanese tradition and understated simplicity. Yanagi features a slightly reversed contrast and a compact structure, making it ideal for impactful display sizes. Yanagi was designed by Jamie Michiki between 2024–2026.
